This week we talked about President's Day and we researched George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. We talked about the role of a president. During math, we decomposed numbers less than 10 into pairs (3+2=5, 1+4=5).
Next week we will cover the following skills: Reading -sight word: come -word family: -op -American symbols (flag, Statue of Liberty, White House, etc.) Math -finding missing numbers that make 10 (3+_=10) Thank you to everyone who participated in International Day. We all loved the parade and really enjoyed learning more about different countries during the rotations. Thank you to the volunteers who shared their time and information about their country with us!! Please make sure you return the enrollment information for next year. This is very important in order to help us make plans for next year. On March 10th, we are going on a field trip to the Teaching Museum. Please be sure to return the signed permission slip. On March 2nd, we will celebrate Dr. Seuss with reading rotations in each Kindergarten class. We will need a few supplies for this special day. Please keep an eye out for a Sign Up Genius for needed supplies. Picture Day is on Wednesday. All children will have their picture taken and you will have a chance to either purchase the individual pictures or return them when they come in. We will also take a class picture. If you want to order a class picture, you need to order it before Picture Day. Order forms went home this week. Thank you for the beautiful flowers and cards for Teacher Appreciation last week! Please bring a card for each person in our class (20 children). We will make a bag here at school. You may start sending in your child's cards on Monday. We will not have school on Friday, Feb. 14 (Dolvin Professional Day) or on Monday, Feb. 17 (Presidents' Day). Please make sure that your child wears a jacket to school when it is cold. We did see a few snow flurries this morning. :) Please make sure that your child is reading aloud each afternoon. Children need a lot of practice reading aloud in order to become fluent readers. Reading -penguins (researching a topic) -long e -word family -ig -living and non-living things Math -addition strategies We are in the middle of cold and flu season, please remind your child to wash their hands frequently and to use a tissue when needed. If your child is not feeling well or has a fever, please keep your child at home to avoid spreading germs and illness. Children need to be fever free for at least 24 hours (without meds) before returning to school. Our Valentine's Day card exchange will be on February 13th. Please bring a card for each child in our class. We have 20 children in our class. Please continue to send a healthy snack each day labeled with your child's name. Please do not send candy or very messy snacks. Also, we only drink water in the classroom. Children are encouraged to dress up like they are 100 years old!! We will do various activities throughout the day with the number 100. It will be a fun day! We will celebrate Valentine's Day on Feb. 13th with a card exchange. If your child participates, please send a card for each child in our class. We have 20 children. Since the weather has been colder, please make sure your child wears a jacket to school each day. Since we are getting closer to first grade, please have your child practice tying his or her shoes. This is a very important skill in order for your child to become more independent. Earlier in the week, an email from Dolvin concerning sickness was sent. If your child has a fever or is not feeling well, please keep them at home until they feel well again and are fever-free for at least 24 hours. We are encouraging children to wash their hands throughout the day in order to stop the spread of germs. Thank you very much for the cards for my birthday, lunch, and the books for our classroom. It will be a fun day all about the number 100. Children are welcome to dress up like they are 100 years old. Maybe they will even see some 100 year old teachers on this special day! We will celebrate Valentine's Day with a card exchange on Feb. 13th. If your child participates, please bring a card for everyone. We have 20 students in our class. Attaching candy to the card will be fine. However, we will not have a Valentine's Day party. Report cards and GKIDS reports will come home today. Please sign the envelope and return it on Tuesday. It will be cold again next week. Please make sure your child wears a jacket to school each day. Scholastic Book Orders were sent home yesterday. There are some great books at great prices included. Please place all orders by next Friday. When you order books, we earn free books for our classroom. It is a win-win for everyone! There will not be school on Monday because it is MLK Day. Reading -long a words -main idea -it word family -MLK Math -measurement -comparing lengths After the break, we welcomed a new student to our class! Welcome Aleina! We love having her in our class and getting to know her better. We now have 20 students in our class. Please continue to have your child read aloud to you each night. The extra practice makes a huge difference in your child's ability to read fluently and comprehend. A new sign up for the Discovery Lab and Mystery Reader were sent out. Be sure to look for it and sign up if you are interested. Please make sure that you are an approved volunteer before you sign up. There is no school on Monday, January 20th, due to the MLK holiday. Reading -sight word: can -word family: -est -review of short vowels -CVC words -story elements -New Year's Math -Measurement (length and comparing length using shorter/taller) We will begin the second semester with a PBIS presentation in order to review Dolvin expectations. Please reinforce the importance of following directions and being a good citizen at home. The January Homework Choice Board will come home on Monday. Please continue to read aloud with your child each night and ask them comprehension questions. Please practice writing a few sentences on a topic. Encourage your child to write a few sentences independently without any assistance. Continue to review the sight words and point them out any time you see them. I look forward to a great second half of Kindergarten! Kindergarten is very excited to celebrate Holidays Around the World on December 16-17, 2019. This event supports our Social Studies curriculum. Each Kindergarten teacher will do a presentation of one of five international winter holidays. These holidays will include Christmas, Hanukkah, Las Posadas, Seollal, and Teng Chieh. The children will rotate to each classroom and learn about different winter holiday customs around the world. If you have any non-religious objects related to any of these holidays that we could use to display during our celebrations, please send it to your child’s teacher by Monday.
Thank you and we look forward to an exciting cultural experience! In math we will review skills from the first semester and create/read various graphs. If your child will miss any days next week, please let me know so I can plan accordingly. We will be out for winter break December 21 – January 5. Our first day back will be Monday, January 6. The 2 week break is a great time to clean out those backpacks of old snacks, papers, toys, etc. Please spend time having your child read aloud each day. Have a great weekend! Reading -gingerbread men -sight word: little -word family: -et -comparing story elements Math -comparing shapes This week I tested the children's reading and comprehension using BAS. Everyone is making progress and I am seeing a lot of improvement. Please support your child at home by having them read aloud to you for at least 15 minutes every day. Ask your child questions about what they read and connections they can make with the book. Continue to review sight words and point out sight words in books. As I always tell the children... the best way to become a better reader is to read, read, read every day! :) The weather is getting colder.
